Is it possible to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise in the same day?
Only a few years ago I used to drive from my home in Calgary to get to Moraine Lake or Lake Louise and spend the day hiking, canoeing, and enjoying the lakes at leisure. This is no longer possible because it is a small area with limited parking and over 4 million visitors visit Moraine Lake and Lake Louise each summer.
I visited Moraine Lake on Canada Day and things have changed a lot in recent years. Many visitors are confused about how to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise.
It is still possible to visit Moraine Lake and Lake Louise on the same day but you’ll need a way to shuttle between them. It is important to plan ahead and have a shuttle, bus, tour reservation, or alternate transportation confirmed well in advance.
Starting in 2025, Parks Canada began charging all commercial vehicles an access fee to go to Moraine Lake and this increased the prices of some private shuttles or tours.
Your 3 best options to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise on the same day
There are several ways to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise and to visit both of them in the same day. The top three options I recommend are the most flexible to schedule your activities around, you can get to both lakes in the same day, and they are also the most cost effective. Even if you only want to go to one of the lakes you still need to plan ahead to find the best way to get there and these are still the best options.
IMPORTANT: Wednesday April 15, 2026 at 8:00am MDT is the launch date to reserve Parks Canada Shuttles.
Your three best options are:
- Cheapest option: Reserve a Parks Canada Shuttle from Lake Louise park and ride
- Best option without a car: Reserve a Roam Transit Reservable Super Pass from Banff
- Best option to guarantee a departure time and avoid waiting in long lines: Reserve a Moraine Lake Bus Company shuttle
🤩Book a guaranteed shuttle time and avoid long lineups with the Moraine Lake Bus Company
If you want to know more about all the ways to get to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake I’ve covered the pros and cons, costs, and flexibility of each option.
Can I drive to Moraine Lake by Car?
The single road to Moraine lake is closed to private vehicles and you can no longer drive there yourself. There is no parking at Moraine Lake except for vehicles with valid parking placards, visitors with disabilities, and guests of Moraine Lake Lodge. Moraine Lake Lodge is the only accommodation located at Moraine Lake. The road to Moraine Lake is only open from about June 1 to mid-October, depending on weather conditions and it is likely that the lake will still be frozen before June 1.
🤩This bestselling guided tour offers fantastic value as you can visit Marble Canyon, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake, the Natural Bridge, Banff Avenue, and Bow Falls all at a very reasonable cost.
Parking at Lake Louise
Lake Louise also receives large crowds of visitors and is becoming increasingly difficult to visit by car in the summer. Although you can technically park at the Lake Louise Lakeshore parking lot it is not recommended because it is extremely difficult to get one of the limited spots and it’s expensive.
The Lake Louise Lakeshore parking lot typically fills up by 5am with very few spots opening up during the day. Limited parking is available at Samson Mall in Lake Louise Village but you still need a way to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise since most shuttles don’t pick up from there.

1. How to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise on a Parks Canada Shuttle
This is recommended if you are driving to Lake Louise or are staying in the community.
Pros: Cheapest option, flexible schedule, sunrise shuttle available, ability to transfer between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.
Cons: Sells out very quickly so you may not be able to get a reservation, no guaranteed lake connector shuttle departure time, long lineups for pickups especially at the end of the day, and you must have a vehicle to get to the car park and ride lot as there is no public transit available.
Pickup/Dropoff Location: Lake Louise Park and Ride, which is located at the Lake Louise Ski Resort .
Goes to both lakes in the same day: Yes, using the Parks Canada Lake Connector shuttle which is included in your ticket price.
Pets: Animals are allowed on Parks Canada shuttles, but only if in a carrying case small enough to fit on your lap. Certified service animals of any size are allowed on shuttle buses.
If you decide to stay in Lake Louise I would recommend camping or staying at the Paradise Lodge and Bungalows. We stayed there last year and it was very comfortable, and because of the close proximity to Lake Louise we were able to walk there and back. Other mid-priced hotels in the area include the Lake Louise Inn or Mountaineer Lodge. The Post Hotel and Spa is a wonderful place to stay but it is pricer than the other options.
Cost: Parks Canada Shuttle Fees: Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Alpine Start
Parks Canada Shuttle Fees

Parks Canada Shuttles are a good option if you are able to book on the opening day, and you are staying in Lake Louise or have your own vehicle to drive to the park and ride. Shuttle reservations are usually available to book beginning in the spring of each year. In 2026, reservations can be made starting on April 15, 2026. Technically, if spots are available, reservations can be made up until the minute before the departure window on a walk in basis but it is very unlikely a spot will be available at the last minute so I would avoid this.

Moraine Lake shuttle reservations are so popular they are usually completely booked within hours when the reservation system opens in April. You can also try to reserve a shuttle to Lake Louise first and then board a Lake Connector Shuttle to get to Moraine Lake but these also book up quickly.
About 40% of the total shuttle reservations are available for booking when the reservation system opens in April. If you missed that day you could try again to reserve a couple of days ahead of your departure date but you are not guaranteed a spot.
The remaining 60% of Parks Canada Shuttle reservations are released on a rolling window at 8 am MDT, 2 days before the day of departure, throughout the entire summer season. These shuttle reservations typically sell out within minutes of 8am MDT so you need to book immediately when they become available. Many people were disappointed last year and were unable to get a spot even if they were ready to book as soon as it opened.
TIP: To improve your chance of reserving a Parks Canada shuttle be sure to create your Parks Canada account in advance and practice clicking around so you are not trying to figure it out when you book. Know what day and time you want to visit before you book and be prepared to be flexible if it is already booked up.
How to reserve a Parks Canada shuttle to Lake Louise or Moraine Lake
To book a Parks Canada Shuttle you must create a Parks Canada Reservation account first that will allow you to reserve online. Parks Canada Shuttles to either Lake Louise or Moraine Lake can be reserved online using your Parks Canada Reservation Account or by phone at 1-877-737-3783.
Shuttles to get to Moraine Lake or to the Lake Louise Lakeshore can be reserved between 6:30am to 6pm each day, and they leave about every 30 minutes. There are also Alpine Start shuttle departures available at 4 or 5am.
Tip: Late afternoon spots are easier to book then morning or daytime shuttle reservations.
The pickup and drop off location for the Moraine Lake or Lake Louise Parks Canada shuttle is the Lake Louise park and ride, which is located at the Lake Louise Ski Resort. You can drive to the park and ride, which has plenty of space, and parking is free.
If you are staying in Lake Louise there is a Park and Ride Connector shuttle that runs every 30 minutes on a loop between the Lake Louise Campground, the community of Lake Louise (Samson Mall) and the Lake Louise Park and Ride. The Lake Louise Park and Ride Connector is free of charge and does not require reservations. There is no public transportation from Banff, Canmore, or Calgary to get to the Lake Louise Park and Ride. If you are coming from outside of Lake Louise you will need your own vehicle or to rent a car to get to the park and ride.
Your Parks Canada Shuttle reservation includes your return trip to the Lake Louise park and ride, from either lake. You can go to either Lake Louise or Moraine Lake first and you can stay at either lake as long as you want. You must catch the last shuttle back to the Lake Louise park and ride no later than 7:30pm (from either Lake Louise or Moraine Lake). It is particularly important not to miss the last shuttle from Moraine Lake to avoid being stranded.
Parks Canada Alpine Start shuttle
If you want to watch the sunrise at Lake Louise or Moraine Lake Parks Canada offers an Alpine Start shuttle at 4am or 5am. Alpine Start shuttle tickets are not available on a walk-up basis and must be reserved no later than 5 pm MDT the day before your intended departure. Alpine Start shuttle reservations are likely to sell out much earlier than the day before. The Alpine Start shuttle originates and returns to the Lake Louise Lakeshore parking lot. Parking at this location is subject to a daily rate which must be paid at the kiosk before boarding your shuttle.
Renting a Car
If you’re planning to rent a car, I always start with Booking.com. I like it because it lets me compare prices, vehicle types, and pickup locations across multiple rental companies, making it easy to find the best deal. If you are part of the Genius Loyalty Program for Booking.com you can also save an additional 10-15% off of car rentals.
Pro tip: Rent your car in Calgary or Edmonton, not in Banff, Canmore, or Jasper. Options in the mountain towns are limited, more expensive, and often sell out during peak season. Booking ahead ensures you get the car you want at a reasonable price.
If you don’t need to pick up your rental directly at the Calgary or Edmonton airport, you can save money by choosing another location in the city. Since you’ll be driving long distances in the Canadian Rockies, make sure to rent a car with unlimited mileage to avoid extra charges.
How to go between Moraine Lake and Lake Louise: Parks Canada Lake Connector
Parks Canada offers a Lake Connector shuttle on a first-come, first-served basis starting on June 1, between Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. The Lake Connector Shuttle is included in your Parks Canada Shuttle ticket (no additional charge) and is a great way to see both lakes on the same day.
The Lake Connector shuttle operates every 30 minutes from 7am to 7pm with the last shuttle from Lake Louise Lakeshore leaving at 6pm and the last shuttle from Moraine Lake leaving at 7pm.
Most shuttle trips will begin and end at the Lake Louise park and ride and you cannot catch the Lake Connector shuttle from the Lake Louise lakeshore without first checking in at the park and ride lot.
There is one exception if you are a guest at a hotel near Lake Louise Lakeshore such as the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise or Paradise Lodge and Bungalows. You may be able to walk to the Lake Louise Lakeshore to catch the Lake Connector shuttle to Moraine Lake without having to go to the park and ride first. You must have a Parks Canada shuttle reservation for the day and provide proof that you are staying at one of these three hotels. Confirm this in advance with Park Canada at 1-877-737-3783 as booking conditions are subject to change.

3. How to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise and avoid waiting in long lineups with Moraine Lake Bus Company
If you want to guarantee a departure and pick up time to see Moraine Lake and Lake Louise and avoid waiting in long lines I highly recommend booking a shuttle with the Moraine Lake Bus Company .
I visited Moraine Lake on Canada Day last year and it was one of the busiest weekends in Banff National Park. I missed the opening day for Parks Canada Shuttles bookings because I made my plans after April. I didn’t really want to wait until two days ahead and take my chances on whether I would be able to reserve a Parks Canada shuttle since I had already prepaid for my hotel in Lake Louise.
For peace of mind, I booked my shuttle to Moraine Lake through the Moraine Lake Bus Company to guarantee I would have a shuttle pickup at a specific time. The Parks Canada Lake Connector has horrendously long lines around midday and it was at its worst during the busy holiday long weekend. With the Moraine Lake Bus Company the pickup time is guaranteed and I did’t have to wait for multiple shuttles to get on a bus. I felt it was well worth the extra cost especially if you want to visit both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake on the same day.
The Moraine Lake Bus Company will collect the new Moraine Lake Access fee at the time of booking (included in ticket prices) on behalf of Parks Canada.
Pros: Flexible schedule, sunrise tours available, guaranteed pickup times, no waiting in line for a shuttle, ability to visit both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, easy booking process without having to create an account in advance, discounted price for the Lake Louise Sightseeing Gondola.
Cons: Cost is higher than Parks Canada shuttles or Roam Transit, you must have a vehicle to get to the car park as there is no public transit to the park and ride.
Pickup/Dropoff Location: Pick up locations are the Samson Mall in Lake Louise Village (near Wilson Mountain Sports) for sunrise tours or the Lake Louise Summer Gondola park and ride for shuttles that leave after 6am. At the Lake Louise Summer Gondola buses pick up from the bus loop outside Lodge of the Ten Peaks.
Goes to both lakes in the same day: Yes If you want to see both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise in the same day you have a couple of options to do this.
Pets: Animals are allowed on our Moraine Lake shuttle buses, but only if in a carrying case small enough to fit on your lap. Certified service animals of any size are allowed.

How to reserve a Moraine Lake Bus Company shuttle
It was super easy to book my shuttle with the Moraine Lake Bus Company last year. I clicked on the “Book” button on their website and selected one of the 4 shuttle bus tour options available. I picked the day I wanted to go on the calendar and the price and departure times were shown. I entered the number of tickets I needed, the time I wanted to be picked up and provided my name, phone number and email. I paid for my ticket and received a confirmation by email immediately. Reserving with Parks Canada is much more cumbersome because you have to create a Parks Canada online account first before you can even attempt to book your shuttle.
Three options to go to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise on the same day with the Moraine Lake Bus Company
If you want to get to Moraine Lake and also visit Lake Louise on the same day there are three ways to do this. You need to be staying in Lake Louise or to have a vehicle to drive to the Lake Louise sightseeing gondola park and ride.
- There is a shuttle that goes first to Moraine Lake and then to Lake Louise for 1 hour of sightseeing before returning back to the sightseeing gondola park and ride.
- There is a shuttle that goes first to Lake Louise and then to Moraine Lake for 1 hour of sightseeing before returning back to the sightseeing gondola park and ride.
- You could book a return shuttle to Moraine Lake and return to the pickup point at the Lake Louise sightseeing gondola. Book a second return shuttle on the same day to see Lake Louise. You can also do this in the reverse order.
The first option works well if you want to spend more time at Moraine Lake and then just have a short stop at Lake Louise to see the lake itself. The third option works best if you want more time at both lakes or if you are booking on two separate days.

Moraine Lake Bus Company sunrise shuttles
The Moraine Lake Bus Company was one of the first to offer a sunrise shuttle to Moraine Lake and they are still the go to operator with sunrise shuttles available at 4:00am or 5:05am. They have perfected this service and are one of the most reliable operators in the area.
Parks Canada reservations for Alpine Start sunrise shuttle timeslots typically sell out in minutes and parking fees are high to park at the pickup location at the Lake Louise lakeshore for the whole day.
Why you should reserve a shuttle with the Moraine Lake Bus Company
This family owned business prides itself on friendly, informative guides who will provide tips on the best photo spots and what to do at Moraine Lake and Lake Louise.
The Moraine Lake Bus Company has 24 passenger busses that are pre-booked for specific departure and return pickup times. In comparison, Parks Canada shuttles only allow return bookings during a 1-hour time slot and not a specific pick up time. At the end of the day there are very long lineups, often an hour or longer, to get a return shuttle back to the park and ride. The Lake Louise and Moraine Lake connector shuttle also doesn’t have a specific transfer time reserved and there can be long lineups particularly around mid-day when most people want to get from one lake to the other.
Moraine Lake Bus Company shuttles have space for strollers, large backpacks, climbing equipment, inflatable paddle boards and walkers but not rigid canoes or kayaks. Pets are allowed if in a carrying case small enough to fit on your lap.

Option 3: Sunrise Tour to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise – Radventures
🤩I love this sunrise tour because they offer hot drinks and can arrange a hot breakfast upon request which is super convenient.
If you do not have a vehicle or other transportation to get to and from Lake Louise there are options for a sunrise tour that will pick you up and drop you off in Banff or Canmore.
This sunrise Moraine Lake and Lake Louise tour offers a pickup and drop off at the Banff Train Station. Hotel pick up and drop off may be possible with advance reservations. There is an option to extend your time at Lake Louise by finding your own alternate transport back to Banff.
This tour stops for a short time at the lakes with about 2.25 hours at Moraine Lake and 2 hours at Lake Louise. After Moraine Lake there is a stop in Lake Louise for a hot breakfast (not included) at the Trail Head Café and hot drinks and water refills are available on the tour (included).
The tour provides enough time to see the lakes and walk around a bit but not enough time to do a hike to Consolation Lakes or Lake Agnes. You could book a canoe rental at Lake Louise if you make arrangements with Radventures in advance.
This tour is only offered at sunrise so you can’t go at other times of day and there is no flexibility to stay longer at Moraine Lake. The cost of the tour is $309CDN/$216USD which is high compared to other alternatives.
Option 4: Sunrise Tour Moraine Lake only or Moraine Lake and Lake Louise – Moraine Lake Sunrise Shuttle
If you want a hotel pickup from select hotels in Banff, Canmore, or Lake Louise another option is to book a tour with Moraine Lake Sunrise Shuttle. They offer a smaller 12 person bus and a more premium experience with a few extras like warm blankets, headlamps, and snacks or boxed breakfast.
You will pay more for this service as tickets range from $135CDN/$94USD for a return ticket to Moraine Lake (2.25 hours at lake) to $185CDN/$129USD for a Dual Lakes Tour to both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise (2.25 hours each lake).
This tour is only offered at sunrise so you can’t go at other times of day and there is no flexibility to stay longer at either lake.
Option 5: Sunrise shuttle – Via Via Moraine Lake shuttle
Via Via Moraine Lake shuttle offers several morning shuttles, including a sunrise shuttle from Canmore and Banff to Moraine Lake. They also offer a tour that goes to both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise (9am departure. They are a family owned business based in the Bow Valley.
Option 6: Private Sunrise tour – Explore Banff tours
Explore Banff Tours offers a shared tour or a private sunrise tour for up to 14 guests to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise from Canmore, Harvey Heights, or Banff. First you watch the sun rise at Moraine Lake with some free time, up to 2 hours, afterwards to explore the lake. The second stop is at Lake Louise where you will have 2 hours at the lake. There is an option to purchase a grab and go breakfast stop at Lake Louise after you leave Moraine Lake (not included).
6. How to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise on a guided sightseeing tour
Pros: Everything is taken care of and you have a knowledgeable guide to answer questions and lead you at each stop. Guided hiking is available for some tours.
Cons: The schedule is fixed and there is no opportunity for variation or flexibility in the schedule. Prices are higher than a shuttle only option.
Pickup/Dropoff Location: Varies by tour but options are available from Banff, Canmore, Calgary, and Lake Louise.
Goes to both lakes in the same day: Yes, all tours include both lakes.
Pets: Not available.
Cost: The cost of this service will depend on the provider, the tour, and where you are departing from and going to. Contact each provider on the links below for pricing and availability.

🤩 I love this tour because it takes you to 3 stunning lakes in the same day without being rushed (Moraine Lake, Lake Louise and Emerald Lake).
7. How to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise on a Hop On Banff Shuttle
Pros: Good option if you are staying in Banff and do not have a car. You can also access this tour if you are staying in Canmore by taking Roam Transit Route 3 to Banff. There are a few different departure times to choose from and it is flexible because you don’t have to prebook a specific departure time at any of the stops. This is option also stops at Johnston Canyon.
Cons: Pricing is higher than Parks Canada shuttle or Roam Transit. No sunrise tours. Limited time at each stop to ensure you can travel to all stops in one day. Only a few departure times from each stop so you need to align your daily activities to the bus schedule.
Pickup/Dropoff Location: Banff Avenue or Banff Train Station.
Goes to both lakes in the same day: Yes, and also stops at Johnston Canyon.
Pets: No pets allowed except service dogs.
Cost: Prices are $126CDN/$88USD for a one day hop on hop off pass.
The Hop On Banff tour operates from June to September and the buses are school bus style with 48 seats. The first pickup time in Banff is 7:45am so it is not possible to see Moraine Lake at sunrise with this tour. The second departure is at 9:30am and the last bus returns to Banff at 6pm. There are a few options of when to depart each stop but the later you leave the less time you have at each stop.
Passengers are picked up daily at the Moose hotel on Banff Avenue (7:45am or 9:30am) or the Banff Train Station (7:50am or 9:30am) in the morning. If you are coming from Canmore, you can board the Roam Transit Route 3 Canmore/Banff Regional service in Canmore as a walk up customer to reach the Moose hotel. If you drive to Banff you can park for free at The Banff Train Station for 9 hours.
This tour makes stops at some of the most popular places in the park including Moraine Lake, Lake Louise and Johnston Canyon. If you can’t see Johnston Canyon on another day this is a great option to see all three places in one day, but with a limited time in each location.
Buses do not run every 15 -20 minutes, so you have less flexibility to choose how long you stay at each stop. There are only about 3 bus pick up times daily at each location so you pretty much have to adjust your day to align with the bus schedule. They do suggest itineraries for the day and the times are reasonable at each location for a short visit.
8. How to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise on an Open Top Shuttle
If you don’t want to go to Lake Louise at sunrise consider this open top double decker bus tour that departs from the Post Hotel and Spa in Lake Louise. You do need transportation to get to the park and ride as there is no public transportation available.
Pros: Flexible option at a reasonable cost compared to other shuttles and tours.
Cons: Pricing is higher than Parks Canada shuttle or Roam Transit. No sunrise tours. Must arrange own transportation or have car to get to park and ride. No guaranteed departure time from each stop. Open rooftop is not sheltered if it rains or weather is cold but there is indoor seating on the lower level.
Pickup/Dropoff Location: Post Hotel and Spa (no parking onsite – park at the Samson Mall or Lake Louise Park and Ride, and take a free shuttle to Samson Mall).
Goes to both lakes in the same day: Yes, both lakes are included in the ticket.
Pets: No pets allowed except service dogs.
Cost: The 2025 cost of a ticket is $65CDN/$45.45USD.
When you book your ticket you can choose from one of 6 departure times to Lake Louise from 8:00am to 1:00pm. The shuttle stops first at Lake Louise, then there is a shuttle that leaves every 60 minutes to Moraine Lake, and every 60 minutes from Moraine Lake back to the starting point at the park and ride.
This is a very flexible option because riders can board any shuttle they like from Lake Louise to Moraine Lake and from Moraine Lake back to the Post Hotel and Spa.
🤩 I love this Open Top tour for its flexible schedule

9. How to get to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise by bike
There are several biking trails in the Lake Louise area, though some are challenging, so it is possible to bike to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. Parks Canada warns road cyclers that the 28km/17.4 mi return route to and from Moraine Lake is on narrow roads with no shoulders, there is significant elevation, and there is a steady volume of commercial bus traffic on the road. The Highline Trail is a challenging mountain biking trail, not recommended for novice riders, with over 300 metres or @1000 feet of elevation to get to Moraine Lake.
Pros: Flexible schedule, faster than hiking, low cost option to visit Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, beautiful views on your ride.
Cons: It takes more time to get there compared to a shuttle ride so you won’t have as much of the day to explore the lakes if you are biking. There is a lot of uphill riding and elevation to get to Moraine Lake. Road biking to Moraine Lake can be hazardous. You need to be a strong biker with the physical ability to complete one or both bike routes to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. You may not have the energy to bike uphill to Lake Louise to explore the area after your bike ride to Moraine Lake.
Pickup/Dropoff Location: If you are not staying locally you will need to find transportation to Lake Louise and bike from there or from a rental shop. Wilson Mountain Sports in Samson Mall Lake Louise Village is the closest location to rent a bike. Some shuttles may also allow bikes so check with operator when you book. The nearest parking lot to Moraine Lake Road is at the end of the road but there are only about 10 parking spots. Add an additional 2km/1.2mi from the Highline Trail to the parking lot. The Station Restaurant has parking for the Tramline Trail.
Goes to both lakes in the same day: Possible, but difficult due to the distance and elevation between both lakes.
Pets: Not practical.
Mountain biking or road biking to Moraine Lake
Road biking can be dangerous during summer months when there is a lot of commercial traffic on Moraine Lake Road and no shoulder to bike on. An alternate option for mountain bikers is the Highline Trail, which starts about 2.5 km (1.55mi) up Moraine Lake Road. This is considered a difficult single track trail for experienced mountain bikers only.
Its difficult to say how long it will take as it depends on the person. It takes a longer to get there than it does to come back downhill. I would estimate from 2 – 2 3/4 hours return time to bike to Moraine Lake depending on where you start. If you can’t start from Moraine Lake because the parking lot is full you can try parking at Samson Mall. This will add additional distance and elevation to your ride. Get an early start as parking fills up quickly in Lake Louise.
Bikers must bring everything that is needed with them because there is no cell service, wi-fi, running water, toilets, or other services including lighting along the road or trail. Bike racks are available at Moraine Lake.
Be sure to reserve your bike rental as early as possible as they can be completely booked at Wilson Mountain Sports well in advance in the summer months.
Normally, Moraine Lake Road is closed over the winter and early spring due to a high avalanche risk near Moraine Lake. There is a very short window near the end of May when it may be possible to bike all the way to the lake before the road opens for the summer season. Since there is no road traffic bikers have the road to themselves. Sometimes the road still has snow on it because it hasn’t been plowed yet and it hasn’t melted and other times it is completely dry.
Mountain biking to Lake Louise
If you have time and energy after biking to Moraine Lake you can go to Lake Louise by mountain bike on the Tramline Trail, a 9km/11.2mi return out and back trail. The trail starts at the Station Restaurant and ends at Lake Louise upper parking lots. The elevation gain is 316 metres/1037 feet and there are beautiful views of Lake Louise village, the lake and Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise resort.

10. How to book a hotel near Moraine Lake or Lake Louise
There are only a few hotels at or within a short walk from Moraine Lake or Lake Louise.
- Moraine Lake Lodge – A remote luxury lodge located on Moraine Lake. Moraine Lake Lodge is the only hotel at Moraine Lake and is only open from June 1 to October 1. They do not offer a shuttle so you need to drive there or find other transportation. They will not guarantee a specific room such as a room with a lake view. Check availability and contact hotel for prices.
- Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise – This iconic luxury full service hotel located on Lake Louise has over 500 rooms. Virtually every service you could want is available from restaurants, pools, spas, fitness centre, hair salons, etc. Check prices and availability.
- Paradise Lodge and Bungalows – Located about 1.5km/0.93mi from Lake Louise there are cabins and lodge suites and some include kitchen facilities. Check prices and availability.
Pros: Unlimited access to the lake with the ability to visit whenever you want including sunrise and sunset, parking is available within walking distance to the lake, it is a unique experience to stay within sight of the lakeshore, you may have some perks or discounts as a guest such as shuttles to Moraine Lake, canoeing on Moraine Lake for no extra charge, or guided interpretative hikes.
Cons: The cost is very high making it unaffordable for many people, there are limited rooms available particularly at Moraine Lake Lodge, you would only see either Moraine Lake or Lake Louise and would still need to make alternate arrangements if you want to see the other lake.
Pickup/Dropoff Location: You need to make arrangements to get to each hotel, but parking is available.
Goes to both lakes in the same day: No, you can stay near Moraine Lake or near Lake Louise but would have to make two separate bookings to see both hotels.
Pets: Moraine Lake Lodge and Paradise Lodge and Bungalows do not have pet friendly accommodation. Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise does allow pets for an extra fee with some conditions and they also provide pet sitting services.
Cost:
Moraine Lake Lodge rooms start at $1370CDN/$993USD per night and you need to contact the hotel directly for prices. Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise rooms start at over $1100CDN/$797USD per night in the summer and go up from there. Paradise Lodge rooms and cabins are about $700CDN/$507USD.

11. How to hike from Lake Louise to Moraine Lake
You can take the 19.5km/12.1mi Paradise Valley Trail that connects Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. This is a long, challenging hike with over 1100 metres/3600 feet of elevation gain and some scrambling. I would only recommend this hike to experienced, well equipped hikers with a high level of physical fitness and the ability to be self sufficient in remote areas without water or other services. You need to start very early in the morning and can start from either Lake Louise or Moraine lake.
Pros: This is a unique, epic, once in a lifetime experience with stunning views. It could be a low cost alternative depending on the cost of transportation to and from each lake.
Cons: You would not have a lot of time to spend exploring Moraine Lake or Lake Louise as the hike itself will take all day. This is a long, strenuous hike and not everyone will have the physical ability to complete it. You would still need to make arrangements to get to Lake Louise to start your hike and from Moraine Lake at the end of your hike.
Pickup/Dropoff Location: You need to make arrangements to get to and from each lake.
Goes to both lakes in the same day: Yes, you can start at one lake and end at the other lake.
Pets: Although you can bring your dog with you on a leash it may not be practical to get through certain sections of the trail with a dog or for some dogs to complete the hike.
Cost: Minimal except for your park pass and any food or equipment you bring with you. There would be additional transportation costs to get to and from Moraine Lake and Lake Louise.
Another hiking option is the 18km/11.2mi return Highline Trail that goes to Moraine Lake but does not go to Lake Louise. There is no access to Moraine Lake Road to park at the trailhead so you will need to add on an additional 2km/1.2mi to walk to and from the nearest parking lot by Lake Louise Drive. Highline Trail runs along a parallel route to Moraine Lake Road and there is over 800 meters/2742 feet of elevation. Its not as technically challenging as the Paradise Valley trail but it is very long so you should expect to spend the whole day getting there and back.

Camping in Banff National Park

A great option for accommodation and getting around Banff is to rent a motorhome. Motorhomes are well equipped with kitchens, bathrooms and everything else you might need to make your trip comfortable plus you can drive them to all of the top attractions in Banff. I would highly recommend Motorhome Republic as a great resource to find and book motorhomes and RV rentals in Alberta.
If you want to camp in the Banff area you should be aware that Parks Canada National Park Reservations open in January each year with different booking dates for each national park. The closest campgrounds are the Lake Louise hard sided or soft sided campgrounds ore nearby Protection Mountain campground. Camping spots are booked up early, especially on weekends, and some high demand locations sell out within minutes. There are often last minute cancellations, particularly in Tunnel Mountain in Banff. You can also reserve at nearby Alberta provincial parks (reservable 90 days in advance), private campsites, or campsites that are a bit further away.
Campgrounds in Banff National Park:
- Banff – Tunnel Mountain Village I or II, or Tunnel Mountain Trailer Court
- Two Jack Lake – Two Jack Lakeside (books almost immediately after opening) or Two Jack Main
- Lake Louise – Lake Louise hard side or soft side campgrounds
- Johnston Canyon – Johnston Canyon campground
- Castle Mountain – Castle Mountain or Protection Mountain campground

Final thoughts
Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are two of the most breathtaking places I have visited anywhere in the world. Moraine Lake, with its striking blue-green waters and the Valley of the Ten Peaks as a backdrop, provides a setting that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. A short drive away, Lake Louise enchants with its emerald waters and the majestic Victoria Glacier.
Its definitely worth visiting Moraine Lake and Lake Louise this summer but be sure to plan ahead to make your visit stress free and to enjoy all of the activities you want at your own pace.
