G Adventures Egypt Tour – A Comprehensive Review

If Egypt has been on your bucket list for years but you’ve hesitated because the planning feels overwhelming, I get it—I was in the exact same position and researched several Egypt tour packages. I finally booked a G Adventures Egypt tour because I wanted a trip that felt safe, organized, and manageable as a solo female traveller. I’d spent so long dreaming about Egypt, but every time I tried to plan it myself, I got stuck on the same questions: Where do I start? What’s realistic in a short amount of time? How do I get from place to place without stressing the whole time?

I decided to stop overthinking and join the G Adventures Wonders of Egypt and the Nile tour. I booked it solo at first, and although a friend later joined me, I had already chosen a company I knew I’d feel comfortable travelling with on my own. I also had two must-haves—a Nile cruise and a visit to Alexandria—and it was surprisingly hard to find a tour that included both. G Adventures offered both, which made the decision easy.

Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)

From the moment I landed, I knew I’d made the right choice. I arrived in Cairo just after the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened, and the whole city felt electric. There had just been an inauguration event with dignitaries from around the world, and you could feel the excitement. Walking into the museum was surreal—it’s enormous, literally twice the size of the Louvre, and houses more than 100,000 artifacts. Seeing the entire 5,000-piece Tutankhamun collection displayed together for the first time was something I’ll never forget.

Tour of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)

And that was only the beginning. This trip turned out to be one of those rare experiences that actually lives up to the years of anticipation. Now I want to share what it was really like—what worked, what surprised me, what I wish I’d known—and help you feel confident planning your own Egypt trip without the stress or uncertainty I struggled with.

Egypt Tour Packages – Why Did I Pick G Adventures?

Overall, I recommend G Adventures Egypt tours to anyone considering a trip to Egypt, especially solo travellers. I had travelled with G Adventures before—with my husband to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand—and had a really positive experience. There were many singles on that trip, as there are on most G Adventures tours, so I already knew I’d feel comfortable joining one on my own. The CEO on my previous trip was excellent, and I went into the Egypt tour expecting the same level of leadership and support. That familiarity and consistency made choosing G Adventures again an easy decision.

1. Small groups (usually around 12 people, max 16)

You actually get to know the people you’re travelling with instead of feeling lost in a crowd. It makes the trip more relaxed and social, even if you arrive solo.

2. Built-in flexibility

You can join included or optional group activities or do your own thing—no pressure. Meals aren’t locked into a strict “all-inclusive” structure, so you can choose where and what you want to eat.

3. Knowledgeable CEOs who go above and beyond

Your CEO isn’t just a guide—they give insider tips, handle logistics, and solve problems quickly. Their support has made a huge difference on every tour I’ve taken.

4. Solo-friendly structure

Many travellers are solo, and they even have “Solo-ish” tours specifically designed for solo travellers. You can also choose to share a room with someone of the same gender to avoid the single supplement, which is cost-effective and makes joining alone feel normal.

5. Wide variety of destinations, itineraries, and travel styles

They travel to a huge range of places around the world, and you can choose from different travel styles—luxury, family, adventure/active, solo, and more—so you can pick the type of trip that fits how you like to travel.

6. Reputable and reliable

They’re highly rated, well-reviewed, and what they promise in the trip documents is what you actually get. I’ve always felt safe and well taken care of.

7. Socially responsible

They support local communities through Planeterra, G Adventures’ own non-profit. Experiences are led by local guides and businesses, so your trip connects you with local people and gives back to the communities you visit.

8. Great value for money

Between included meals, organized logistics, and frequent sales, I couldn’t plan the same trip on my own for less. It genuinely offers good value.

9. Transportation and logistics handled for you

You don’t have to worry about transfers, timing, or standards. Accommodations are mid-range and reliable, and the itineraries help you see a lot in a short time.

10. Traveller-friendly policies and consistent service

Their Lifetime Deposit policy is one of the best in the industry— if your plans change you can keep your deposit and use it anytime, whether it’s 10 weeks or 10 years later, with no questions asked. Along with their solid customer service (much better than some companies I’ve travelled with), it shows they actually stand by their travellers.

What You Need to Know About the Wonders of Egypt and the Nile Tour

Airport Arrival and Departure Logistics

One of the first benefits of this tour became clear the moment I landed in Cairo. The airport was absolute chaos—I’ve never seen anything like it. People were confused, wandering in different directions, and the lineups weren’t really lineups at all, with people cutting in wherever they could. In that environment, having G Adventures arrange airport assistance was a huge relief. A staff member named Touche met us right away, fast-tracked the arrival visa process, and guided us through customs with no confusion or stress. The included private transfer to the hotel was professional and calm, which I appreciated even more after the long flight and the hectic arrival scene. For departures, however, I found the G Adventures transfer price extremely inflated—more than four times what I paid when I booked independently. Because of this, I recommend booking a local driver after you arrive or using platforms like GetYourGuide or Viator for the return transfer instead.

🤩 This Get Your Guide transfer service is highly rated by travellers.

Arriving Early in Cairo

I arrived a couple of days before the tour started and stayed at the Flamenco Hotel Cairo in Zamalek. The décor was dated, but the rooms were large, the beds were comfortable, and the hotel had helpful staff, a Nile-view restaurant, and a cozy bar. The location was a big plus. Zamalek is an upscale, safe island in the Nile with embassies, international schools, and excellent restaurants, and I felt completely comfortable exploring it on my own as a solo female traveller.

Flamenco Hotel in Zamalek, Cairo

I also visited some great shops in the area that sell high-quality handmade goods from across Egypt, including Nomad Gallery and Fair Trade Egypt. At Nomad Gallery, I ended up getting a beautiful cartouche necklace with my name carved in hieroglyphics. During one of my walks, my friend and I met a friendly Irish expatriate who shared local tips and recommended the Sufi Bookstore—a small, charming café filled with antiques. Later, she even took us to her friend Pierre’s place, The Loft Gallery, right across the hall, which was full of unique vintage pieces and antiques. It ended up being a really fun and memorable introduction to Cairo.

One of the advantages of arriving early was the option to join the Coptic and Islamic Cairo tour. In Coptic Cairo, you can see the Hanging Church, the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Coptic Museum, all showcasing Egypt’s early Christian history. In Islamic Cairo, highlights include the Citadel of Saladin and the Muhammad Ali Mosque, along with other historic mosques like Sultan Hassan Mosque, offering insight into Cairo’s rich Islamic heritage. This optional tour is a great way to explore the city’s history before the main tour begins.

Nile Cruise Experience

3-night Nile Cruise from Aswan to Luxor

The Steigenberger Regency Nile cruise was one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip, and we upgraded to a smaller ship than the usual Iberotel Crown Empress, which made it feel more intimate. Every cabin had a balcony overlooking the river, giving a relaxing space to enjoy the scenery. One morning I woke up, looked out my balcony, and saw a multitude of hot air balloons rising over the West Bank of Luxor, which was a really special moment.

View from my room on the Nile Cruise
Early morning Luxor hot air balloons

The cruise itself offered memorable experiences along the Nile. We passed under a low bridge where we literally had to sit or lie down to avoid hitting our heads. The sunsets were stunning, with lush green fields along the river backed by the endless brown desert landscape, creating a striking contrast. Local vendors often attached their small boats to the ship, selling everything from scarves to trinkets by tossing the items up to the top deck and collecting money from passengers, which gave a real sense of everyday life on the river.

River traders – selling their wares on the Nile River

The pool on the ship was small but adequate, and the food was excellent—fresh, varied, and fully included. The staff were attentive and went out of their way to make everyone comfortable. The combination of well-paced activities and downtime made the cruise relaxing while still letting us take in the highlights of the Nile.

Hotels in Aswan, Luxor, and Alexandria

Steigenberger Resort Achti in Luxor

In Aswan (Basma Hotel) and Luxor (Steigenberger Resort Achti), the hotels were more modern and had a resort-like feel, with large pools and many amenities. In Luxor, we also had fantastic views of the Nile. The rooms in both places were spacious, and the beds were comfortable, which made these stops feel relaxing.

Basma Hotel Room in Aswan

Alexandria was a very different experience. The Metropole Hotel Alexandria is housed in a historic palace in a central seaside location, right in the middle of a very busy and hectic area filled with people, traffic, shops, restaurants, and constant noise. The hotel offered some nice touches like a complimentary daily happy hour with wine, canapés, and soup, a charming old-style elevator with a pull gate, and a nice rooftop restaurant with panoramic views of the Mediterranean, the Citadel, and the city.

It was unique and memorable, but there were trade-offs that come with an older property. The beds were small twin beds pushed against the wall, and the décor definitely showed its age, although the bathrooms had been updated. One guest in our group also found a cockroach in her room, which can happen in older buildings in busy coastal cities. The windows let in a lot of street noise as well, especially the constant honking at night.

Transportation and Safety Measures

All buses used on the tour were air-conditioned, in good shape, and spacious enough to spread out during longer drives. I found the long bus rides comfortable and safe. One unusual aspect was the presence of a government-assigned security guard on certain routes, such as from Cairo to Alexandria. This is a precautionary measure in Egypt for safety of tourists but not something I’ve encountered elsewhere.

A remote road stop on the drive across the desert to Abu Simbel

The bus drivers were excellent—navigating Cairo and Alexandria traffic, narrow streets, and chaotic intersections where traffic lights seem optional. Two internal flights were also included through EgyptAir. Note that EgyptAir is a dry airline and does not serve alcohol, even on long-haul flights, which surprised a few people in our group.

Smart Itinerary Planning

One of the biggest practical benefits of G Adventures was their consideration of how to move between sites without losing time. For example, our visit to Abu Simbel was arranged by road instead of by plane because delays and cancellations are not uncommon. Driving actually saved time and allowed us to avoid arriving alongside an entire planeload of people funneling through the same tombs at once.

Abu Simbel

I’m not a morning person, so the early departures were sometimes painful, but they made the days much more enjoyable. Starting early meant avoiding intense heat and large crowds. Visiting Luxor Temple when it had just opened up is something I wouldn’t have experienced without that schedule.

Managing Tipping

Tipping is a constant part of daily life in Egypt and expected for nearly every service. The customary amounts weren’t clear to us when we first arrived, and getting small bills can be difficult. G Adventures handled this well by creating a group “tipping kitty.” Our CEO collected a set amount from everyone at the beginning and then tipped appropriate amounts on behalf of the group after each service. This took the guesswork out of an important cultural expectation and avoided missteps such as overtipping or unintentionally offending someone.

Food and Water

A major benefit of the Wonders of Egypt and the Nile tour is that many meals are included, which simplifies planning and budgeting. All breakfasts were buffet style with a variety of options like omelettes, pancakes, waffles, yogurt, and fresh fruit. Four lunches and dinners were included—three on the Nile cruise, where the buffet had a wide selection of fresh dishes. The other included meals were served in the homes of Egyptian families and featured hearty soups, fresh pita bread, and meat or vegetarian stews. The families were warm and welcoming, and sharing these meals gave us a real taste of authentic Egyptian food while experiencing genuine local hospitality. Other meals were flexible, and I appreciated being able to join the group or go on my own with no pressure.

Food and water safety is important in Egypt. Tap water and uncooked vegetables can be risky, so our CEO provided clear guidance on where it was safe. The hotels were generally fine, and I didn’t have any issues during the tour, though I did get sick on my return flight, likely from food on Egypt Air. For travellers considering a G Adventures tour, included meals and guidance on food safety make the trip easier, more comfortable, and less stressful.

Included Sites and Optional Add-Ons

Hatshepsut Temple

The G Adventures Wonders of Egypt and the Nile tour met my expectations by including all the must-see sites and experiences that make a trip to Egypt memorable. In Cairo, I chose to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum instead of the included Egyptian Museum and Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, and it was incredible—I saw Tutankhamun’s complete collection, never displayed together before the museum’s opening, along with countless other rarely seen artifacts. I hope G Adventures will consider making this the standard for future tours.

In Alexandria, we explored the Catacombs, Pompey’s Pillar, and the Great Alexandria Library, while in Aswan, visiting a Nubian village and Abu Simbel gave a close-up view of local life and some of Egypt’s most impressive historical monuments. Near Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Colossi of Memnon, Luxor Temple, and Karnak Temple showcased Egypt’s most iconic monuments, while the Nile River cruise, including a stop at Kom Ombo, provided relaxing views and a different perspective of the country. Local experiences, like sharing meals with Egyptian families, cycling on the West Bank, visiting the Monastery of Saint Macarius, and observing artisans at alabaster, papyrus, and perfumery workshops, added authenticity.

Kom Ombo Temple

All major sites—like the Giza Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, and other key monuments—were included with entrance fees covered. Optional activities were truly optional. I chose to do all of them and felt they added value, especially the visits to Sakkara, the Philae Temple near Aswan, and several lesser-known, and less crowded, tombs and temples on Luxor’s West Bank. The included sites and experiences give travellers access to important historical and cultural locations across Egypt without needing to organize transportation, tickets, or timing on their own.

Knowledgeable Certified Egyptologist CEO Included

Super Mo and our G Adventures tour group

Having a knowledgeable Certified Egyptologist as our Chief Experience Officer (CEO) added immense value to our trip. Our CEO, known as Super Mo to distinguish him from the many other Mohammeds in Egypt, truly lived up to his nickname. From the very start, he went above and beyond to help resolve our “first world problems”—picking up medicine for a guest who developed a sinus infection with the same ingredients she used back home, buying us what turned out to be the best falafels of our entire trip, arranging transportation to and from places we wanted to visit on our own at reasonable prices, and making thoughtful recommendations for local restaurants. These gestures made the trip feel seamless and personalized, especially for solo travellers like me who can sometimes feel uncertain navigating a new city.

Beyond the practical support, Super Mo’s expertise as a Certified Egyptologist was incredible. He has a university background in Egypt’s history and over 20 years of experience in leading tours, which meant that every site we visited—from the Valley of the Kings to the temples along the Nile—was brought to life with rich historical and cultural context. His explanations went beyond the standard facts; he shared stories, connections, and insights that deepened my understanding and made the history feel real. Visiting sites like Luxor Temple or the Pyramids while hearing his detailed background gave me a much richer experience than I could have gotten from a guidebook alone.

Luxor Temple

Super Mo also provided invaluable local knowledge that made navigating Egypt much easier and safer. He explained cultural norms, dos and don’ts, where it was safe to go alone, and which areas to avoid. He gave practical advice on everyday matters, like how to respond to vendors, avoid scams, know what taxis should cost, and recognize when something is reasonably priced versus overpriced. His tips extended to meals, too—he highlighted restaurants that were authentic and worth visiting, and even offered to help negotiate purchases at the market on our behalf.

For me, having someone like Super Mo on the trip meant I could relax and enjoy Egypt without worrying about logistics or feeling overwhelmed. His combination of deep historical knowledge, local insights, and personal care—including solving our challenges and helping sort out hotel room issues—created a sense of safety, comfort, and trust. It was one of the aspects of the tour that truly enhanced the overall experience and made it feel not just like a trip, but like being looked after by someone who genuinely cared about our experience.

Cons of a G Adventures Egypt Tour

Philae Temple near Aswan
  • Extra costs for add-ons: Optional activities like extra tombs, Philae Temple, and Coptic/Islamic Cairo can add up, increasing the total cost, but they are truly optional and let you tailor the tour to your interests and budget.
  • Return transfer overpriced: The G Adventures departure transfer is much more expensive than local alternatives, though you can easily book a driver or use platforms like GetYourGuide or Viator for a fraction of the price.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) not included: Standard Cairo stops include the Egyptian Museum and the Khan el Khalili Bazaar, not GEM, but you can choose to visit GEM instead, as I did, and hopefully it will be added as a standard in future tours.
  • Noisy and fast-paced: Hotels in big cities can be loud, and the itinerary is intense and moves quickly; however, the pace lets you see all the top sites efficiently while still including some downtime to rest.
  • Limited flexibility: Some parts of the schedule, like time in each city, can’t be changed, though the itinerary is carefully planned to maximize sightseeing in the available time.
  • Temple and tomb fatigue: Visiting multiple sites daily can be tiring, but early starts help avoid crowds and heat, and the CEO paces the tour to make it more comfortable.
  • Haggling fatigue: Shopping at markets requires constant negotiation, though the CEO provides guidance, and the group tipping system reduces stress around meals and services.

Things to Know for First Time Visitors to Egypt

Alexandria street near our hotel
  • Visa Requirements – Check the visa rules for your nationality before travelling. For many, you can get a visa on arrival for a cash fee (I paid $25 USD). This is your responsibility, not G Adventures’.
  • eSIM / Internet – Get an eSIM in advance (I use Airalo). Reliable internet is essential for maps, communication, and translations—you’ll regret not having it. If you want a discount on your eSIM use my referral code JENNIF8734 .  When you get to the checkout page, under “Total Price” click “Redeem Referral or Discount Code”, enter the promo or referral code in the box, and click “Redeem” to have the discount applied to your bill.
  • Ride-Sharing – Set Uber payments to cash; drivers often dislike card payments since they are only paid monthly. In Luxor, we found that prices in the app may be negotiable—drivers asked what we were willing to pay—though this didn’t happen in other cities. Careem is another local ride sharing option with potentially more drivers.
  • Cash and Credit Cards – You can’t usually buy Egyptian Pounds at home but it is easy to get when you arrive. You can get cash at an ATM in the airport or around the major cities. I brought a bunch of US cash including a bunch of dollar bills and I wish I hadn’t. Some machines allow you to exchange USD or Euros for Egyptian pounds but they are not everywhere and didn’t always work well with some bills. Egyptians prefer not to get 1 dollar US bills for tips or payment as they have to go to a bank to exchange them and they will be rejected if they are not in perfect condition. Credit cards are also widely accepted at many restaurants and hotels though not for tips or in the markets. Use my free printable currency conversion cheat sheet to compare your own currency to Egyptian Pounds.
  • Aggressive Vendors – Vendors are common at entrances and exits of all tourist sites and throughout big cities. La Shukran is a polite term to deter them. Be cautious of scams, such as someone posing as a cook from your Nile cruise who says they are going to buy spices and offers to take you along—these approaches are meant to get you to spend money unnecessarily.
  • Attention as a Woman – Men may stare as you walk around; foreigners stand out. It’s not unsafe, but it can feel uncomfortable. Sometimes people want to take photos with you because you look different from what they are used to.
  • Haggling – Bargaining is expected for nearly everything. It’s part of the culture but can get tiring if you’re not used to it. Starting prices for tourists are usually very high.
  • Tipping & Toilets – Tipping is expected everywhere; failing to tip can be offensive. Most toilets charge a small fee to pee, even at paid tourist sites. Always carry small bills (5, 10, 20 Egyptian Pounds) and carry extra toilet paper just in case.
  • Bring comfortable closed toe runners/sneakers – You will be doing a lot of walking on this tour and streets are really dirty and covered in garbage in the large cities of Egypt. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid white sneakers.
  • Weather – Extremely hot, particularly in Luxor and Aswan, even in shoulder seasons. Plan outdoor activities for mornings or late afternoons for comfort.
  • Tourist Sites – Can be dusty, dirty, and rocky with blowing sand and little shade. Bring a good sunhat and high SPF suntan lotion to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Animals – Dogs, cats, and other animals are commonly roaming free in cities and tourist sites. They are generally harmless, but consider vaccinations if you’re concerned.
  • Dress Code – Cover shoulders and knees in some places like mosques. In most tourist areas, tank tops and shorts are fine; women are not expected to cover their hair. It is very, very hot in the crowded tombs so don’t wear anything too heavy.
  • Read the Fine Print – G Adventures includes detailed documentation. Review it carefully so there are no surprises about what’s included, optional tours, or other logistics.
  • Insurance is Mandatory on all G Adventures Tours – If you don’t already have medical coverage you can purchase it at a reasonable price through World Nomads.

🤩 I highly recommend World Nomads for affordable and comprehensive travel insurance for unexpected emergencies.

Wonders of Egypt and the Nile Tour Pricing

The Wonders of Egypt and the Nile tour offers strong value, balancing comfort, quality, and inclusions like accommodations, meals, transportation, internal flights, entrance fees, and guided tours. G Adventures sometimes has sales around Black Friday, early in the year, or last-minute before departure, making it possible to book at a lower price. For first-time visitors, the convenience and support make it worth the cost. Personally, I would not recommend travel to Egypt unless it was on a guided tour.

Solo‑ish Egypt (9 days)
Designed specifically for solo travellers, this trip covers Cairo, Giza, Aswan, and Luxor. You get a mix of guided tours and free time, and the group size is small, making it easy to connect without feeling locked into every activity.

Other Options: Intrepid Travel – Egypt Tours
Intrepid is a well‑known, reputable small‑group company with strong local guides and flexible tour styles. Their Egypt trips often cover the same landmarks as G Adventures but offer different accommodation and transport options. I don’t recommend Exoticca based on my experience with their customer service—they were unresponsive, had poor planning, communication, and logistics, and were inflexible when issues came up.

My Experience with the G Adventures Wonders of Egypt and the Nile Tour – Is it Worth it?

From start to finish, I felt completely taken care of on the G Adventures Wonders of Egypt and the Nile tour. All logistics—from airport transfers to internal flights, hotels, transportation, and site visits—were handled seamlessly, so I could focus entirely on enjoying Egypt. The tour included all breakfasts, four lunches and dinners, entrance fees to major sites, and many guided experiences, which made it excellent value for money.

We visited all the top destinations: the Giza Pyramids and Sphinx, Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel, Luxor and Karnak Temples, the Nile Cruise, and Alexandria. Local experiences, like lunches with Egyptian families, cycling on the West Bank, and visiting artisan workshops, added authenticity and a personal touch to the journey.

The highlight was our CEO, Super Mo. Knowledgeable, super helpful, and always attentive, he went above and beyond—solving practical issues, offering safety tips, managing tipping, and bringing Egypt’s history and culture vividly to life. I wouldn’t consider travelling to Egypt without a tour like this.

Do I need a visa to travel to Egypt?

Yes. Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival for a fee (e.g., $25 USD cash for many countries). Always check requirements for your specific country in advance, as you’re responsible for having the correct documents.

Is Egypt safe for solo travellers, especially women?

Yes, with common-sense precautions. Egypt can feel intense—vendors are persistent, and men may stare at foreigners—but you are generally safe. G Adventures provides airport assistance, trusted transport, and knowledgeable CEOs who ensure your safety and comfort.

Yes. Tipping is a cultural norm in Egypt. G Adventures handles this with a “tipping kitty,” collecting an upfront amount and tipping appropriately on your behalf, which simplifies the process.

Tap water and uncooked vegetables can be risky. Stick to filtered water, cooked meals, and follow CEO guidance. I didn’t get sick during the tour, but travel on EgyptAir after the trip made me a bit ill.

You need to be able to walk, stand, and navigate small tombs and uneven terrain. Tours are fast-paced, and some mornings start early to avoid heat and crowds.

How is G Adventures different from other companies?
