For years, we’d make a point of stopping at Mount Engadine Lodge after our hikes, treating ourselves to their famous afternoon tea overlooking Moose Meadows. We’d always dreamed of staying overnight, and when we finally got the chance for a weekend getaway, the experience completely surpassed our expectations. This has become my all-time favorite mountain retreat, and in this Mount Engadine Lodge review, I’m excited to share all the reasons why.

We’ve now stayed here a couple of times and each visit was just as special. In November, after snowshoeing through fresh powder at Sawmill, we returned to the lodge, kicked off our boots, and spent the afternoon by a crackling fireplace, nibbling on a charcuterie board and sipping hot apple cider. This summer, we stayed in a cozy glamping tent and were completely captivated, snapping photos, as a moose grazed in the meadow just steps away from our deck.

Mount Engadine Lodge is one of those unforgettable places that stays with you long after you’ve left. Just a short, breathtaking drive from Calgary, Canmore, or Banff—it feels like a world away, making it an ideal weekend escape from the city.

You can come here year round and we love that it’s not a big resort but a small, intimate lodge with just a handful of rooms. After parking in the nearby lot, step into the boot room to remove your hiking boots. One of the friendly live-in staff will be there to greet you, explain how everything works, and answer any questions you might have.

Mount Engadine Lodge is situated in a remote area with no cell service, so you won’t have phone coverage during your stay. WiFi is available in the main lodge, but there are no TVs anywhere on the property. This setup encourages guests to focus on the natural surroundings and enjoy a quieter, simpler experience.

The main lodge features a spacious, open dining area with long tables and a canoe hanging from the ceiling, where everyone gathers for meals, framed by big windows that overlook the mountains. You’ll be assigned a table for your stay and will usually join other guests for a communal dining experience. Every stay includes all your meals, so you can start your day with a sweet or savoury breakfast, take a packed lunch on your outdoor adventures, come back for afternoon tea by the fire, and end the day with a gourmet dinner.

Our Stay in Moose Suite – Main Lodge

The Moose Suite was located at the end of the hallway on the second floor of the main lodge. The room has a vaulted ceiling and is a bright space with plenty of windows and even a balcony where we could step out and take in the views of the mountains. There are a few other guest rooms on this floor, with the main common area located below. The floor was carpeted and soundproofing was excellent—we never heard a peep from the neighboring rooms.

Inside, there was a comfortable queen-size bed with high-quality linens and a warm and cozy duvet . The room was quite spacious and included a small table with two chairs, plus a welcoming living area with a pull out couch and a gas fireplace that made the space feel warm and inviting. The bathroom was spotless and the water pressure was good, though the shower space was a bit on the small side. In advance, I’d arranged with the staff to book the romance package, and they had everything ready when we arrived—wine, a board with fresh fruits and homemade chocolate bear claws waiting for us in the room.

One of the standout features of this room was the stunning mountain view that greeted us each morning. We stayed here in November and especially appreciated that our room was located upstairs, making it easy to walk up and down for meals without needing to bundle up in coats and boots or trudge through deep snow and cold. Since WiFi is available only in the main lodge, staying in the main building was a definite plus for us.

This room is not pet-friendly and doesn’t include a mini-fridge or cooking facilities—but that’s rarely an issue since all meals are provided. If you need to store anything in the fridge, the lodge staff are more than happy to accommodate your request. If you are looking for pet-friendly options you can stay in a glamping tent, one of the private cabins, the yurt or the Elk Suite in the main lodge. The Elk Suite is just below the Moose Suite and is a similar size and has similar amenities.

Another standout feature was the adjustable gas fireplace. We loved spending time in our room, listening to music, sipping wine, enjoying the treats delivered to us, and watching the fire flicker—it created a truly romantic atmosphere.

Our Stay in a Glamping Tent

Staying in a glamping tent at Mount Engadine Lodge offers a rustic camping experience with some important comforts. We stayed in the Wolverine tent while our friends stayed in the Larch tent next door and both had the same layout. The tents are built on sturdy wood frames with canvas walls and vinyl floors covered by rugs. Inside, there’s a king-size bed that can be split into two twins, high-quality linens and a duvet, plus a pull-out couch. The tents have a gas fireplace for heat, a wood table with two chairs, and a small ensuite bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet. There’s also interior lighting, a ceiling fan, and a floor fan to keep things comfortable. The front door and window let in fresh air.

Each tent has a large outdoor deck with Adirondack chairs that overlook Moose Meadows. The tents are pet-friendly but don’t have a fridge or cooking facilities, which isn’t an issue since meals are served in the main lodge, just a short walk away. There is no WiFi in the tents, so if you need to stay connected, you’ll want to spend time in the lodge.

We liked that the tents gave a real camping feel but with luxury touches. One day, we saw a moose grazing right below our deck, which was a cool surprise. When we visited in winter, people staying in the tents told us it was cozy and warm inside, though it did get a bit colder near the edges. Bringing slippers is a good idea and if you forget they also sell some in the main lodge. There’s no air conditioning, but the fans work fine since the mountain air cools off well at night. One downside is that the tent walls are thin; our friends heard a baby crying in the tent next door, so light sleepers might want earplugs. Overall, the glamping tents provide a simple, comfortable way to enjoy the outdoors with some extra conveniences.

Accommodations and Amenities

There are several accommodation options but they do fill up quickly since the lodge only accommodates a maximum of 38 guests. Depending on your needs, you can choose from 3 individual cabins, 5 glamping tents, 1 yurt, and 6 inviting rooms and suites in the main lodge. All accommodations, except for the yurt, are available year-round, even during the coldest months of winter. The glamping tents stay toasty warm throughout the chilly weather thanks to their gas fireplaces. Reduced rates are available for solo travellers and there is one lodge room (Chickadee) that is a single room.

Every detail in the accommodations at Mount Engadine Lodge is designed to make you feel relaxed and at home. The beds are premium pillow‑top mattresses with upgraded linens and pillows, so you sink in for an amazing night’s sleep, and some rooms even have pull‑out beds if you’re traveling with family or friends. Certain options come with individually controlled gas fireplaces, private balconies, and cozy sitting areas—both indoors and out—or big windows with incredible mountain views.

Every room has its own ensuite bathroom stocked with local Rocky Mountain Soap Company products. You won’t find in‑room televisions or cell service here, and Wi‑Fi is only available in the main lodge, but that’s part of the charm of getting away from it all.

Mount Engadine Lodge is pet-friendly and there are several accommodations where you can bring a dog or cat (for an extra charge) and they even offer a freshly baked cookie for your pup to enjoy upon arrival.

Dining and Food

Breakfast is served in the main lodge from 8-9am and includes fresh fruit and baked goods, plus your choice of a sweet or savoury hot breakfast entree. Tea, coffee and juice are included and hot beverages are available throughout the day for guests in the dining room.

Each night at dinner you select the items you would like to include in the next day’s bagged lunch. Bagged Lunches include delicious freshly-made sandwiches and a variety of snacks and they will be ready for pickup after breakfast.

Afternoon tea is served from 2-5 daily in the lodge lounge, dining room or on the patio. Afternoon tea includes a luxurious charcuterie board with an assortment of local meats, cheeses, and fruits. Beverages include a selection of hot teas and coffees, or you can opt for an alcoholic beverage or alternative drink for an extra charge. Drop in visitors should make a reservation if they wish to join afternoon tea.

Mount Engadine’s resident chef prepares a gourmet meal daily and from 6:30pm to 8pm daily, a three course plated meal (appetizer, main, and dessert) is served to guests in the main dining room. If there is space, a reservation can be made for non-guests to join.

Mount Engadine has a full bar on site, offering an array of local craft beers, Canadian and International wines, spirits, and seasonal cocktails (extra charge) and other non-alcoholic specialty drinks are also available (extra charge).

If you have specific food allergies or preferences let them know in advance and they will do their best to accommodate you. Since they bring everything in from town it is important to let them know before you arrive to avoid disappointment.

Service

The service at Mount Engadine Lodge was outstanding—staff were incredibly attentive, helpful, and genuinely personal in their approach. They knew the area well and offered great suggestions to make our stay even better. It was clear they were willing to go above and beyond to ensure each guest’s experience was special.

The lodge also offers special packages like the romance package, which includes bubbly and chocolates, as well as family getaways—including around Christmas—and even hosts small weddings, elopements, and retreats.

I also appreciated the unique merchandise available for sale, like slippers, toques, and an Alberta-shaped charcuterie board featuring Rocky Mountain sites which I brought home as a memorable keepsake from our trip.

What To Do Nearby and Activities at the Lodge

One of the things I love most about staying at Mount Engadine Lodge is how many incredible outdoor adventures are right at your doorstep. Right outside the lodge, it’s common to see wildlife wandering through the meadow—you might spot a deer or moose grazing or even a bear passing by as you sip your morning coffee.

If you’re like me and love getting outside, there are endless activities just a short drive away, and you don’t even need to bring all your own gear. The lodge rents out all kinds of equipment, including all‑season e‑bikes, stand‑up paddleboards, cross‑country skis, snowshoes, shoe spikes, backpacks, hiking poles, and even bear spray, so you’re well‑prepared.

After a day out, it’s such a treat to relax on the outdoor patio or gather around the firepit under the mountain sky. Inside the main lodge, there’s Wi‑Fi if you need to connect, but I often find myself in the games room instead, playing a board game, listening to someone picking out a tune on the piano or guitar, or just enjoying the cozy atmosphere over a beverage. On some weekends, they even host live music—check their website ahead of time because it’s such a fun bonus to an already memorable stay.

Hiking or Snowshoeing

🤩 If you prefer to go on a hike with an experienced guide and a small group this is a great option for a day hike in the area.

Some of my favourite easy to intermediate hikes and snowshoes are near Mount Engadine Lodge in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park or Spray Lakes Provincial Park:

Some trails are open only in summer or winter, so be sure to check the provincial park websites above for current trail conditions and any warnings before you go.

There are many avalanche areas in the area and you should not travel to these areas unless you are trained and have appropriate equipment to do so safely. Winter Activities and Sports

There are several other activities in the area in the winter:

• Cross Country Skiing – Groomed trails like Pocaterra and the Tyrwhitt Loop are suited for beginners and intermediate skiers, while the Elk Pass Trail provides a more challenging route for intermediate to advanced skiers. Mount Shark is closest to Mount Engadine Lodge and offers a range of ski trails.
• Ice Skating – Spray Lakes offer a beautiful frozen surface surrounded by snowy peaks—perfect for a scenic skate day. Kananaskis Village Outfitters rents ice skates to use at the maintained Village Pond ice skating rink.
• Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, or Back country Skiing – Nakiska Ski Resort is nearby with well-maintained runs for all abilities, or for backcountry skiing, Chester Lake offers a rewarding experience skiing on ungroomed, natural snow with stunning mountain views.
• Dogsledding – You can experience dogsledding tours just a short drive from Mount Engadine Lodge, with several operators in the Kananaskis area offering guided rides through scenic snowy trails. • Horse Sleigh Ride – A horse-drawn sleigh ride at Boundary Ranch in Kananaskis is a wonderful winter activity where you ride through quiet, snow-covered forest trails while staying warm under cozy blankets.
• Toboganning – You can find great tobogganing spots at the nearby Kananaskis Village and along some of the gentle hills around Barrier Lake.
• Ice Fishing – You can apply through Alberta Parks for a Spray Lake Ice Fishing Shelter Permit and the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes are also pristine fishing locations.
• Fat Tire Biking – Fat bikes are available for guests at Mount Engadine Lodge to rent and there are numerous trails to explore nearby.

Summer Activities and Water Sports

A few years back I went with my entire extended family on a white water rafting trip in the area and it was a lot of fun. I would highly recommend this rafting trip if you are looking for a guided experience with a reputable and professional company.

• Kayaking, Canoeing, or Paddleboarding– The best spots in Kananaskis include Spray Lakes Reservoir, the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes, Wedge Pond, and Barrier Lake.
• White water rafting or kayaking – Canoe Meadows and Widow Maker on the Kananaskis River are popular areas for white water rafting and kayaking in Kananaskis.
• Boating – Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes as well as Spray Lakes Reservoir allow trailer-launched boats.
• Rock climbing and Canyoning– There are several areas to go rock climbing in Kananaskis or closer to Canmore including the Rawson Lake area, Grassi Lakes, Barrier Lake, and Yamnuska.

• Dog Carting – Boundary Ranch is one of the only places in Western Canada where you can experience Dog Carting. This unique adventure activity is similar to dog sledding but it is offered on dryland.
• Golfing – Kananaskis Country Golf Course is a world class alpine golf course with spectacular views.
• Fishing – You can find various species of sport fish including rainbow, brown, brook, cutthroat, bull, and lake trout, alongside Arctic grayling and mountain whitefish. There are numerous ponds and lakes throughout the area to fish but be sure to check the sports fishing regulations and to get a license in advance. 
• Picnic and Sightseeing Drive– The area near Mount Engadine Lodge is perfect for a scenic drive or picnic at one of the scenic day use areas. You can go for a picnic essentially anywhere that you want to but some day use areas also have amenities like picnic tables, outdoor firepits, washrooms, and garbage bins. A few of the day use areas I like nearby include the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes, Spray Lakes, Wedge Pond, Barrier Lake, or Mount Lorette Ponds.
• Swimming – Yes, you can swim in the glacier fed lakes in the area but you should expect chilly and refreshing water. A few local swimming areas include Spray Lakes Reservoir, Upper Kananaskis Lake, Wedge Pond, and Quarry Lake, a manmade lake in Canmore.
• Pickleball – Pickleball courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis at Kananaskis Village. Rentals are available at Kananaskis Outfitters.
• Mountain Biking – The area near Mount Engadine Lodge includes some of the best mountain biking trails in the world through pristine forested areas. The Mount Shark Mountain Biking trail system and Karst Spring trail are easy trails nearby.

• Wildlife sighting – Wildlife sightings near Mount Engadine Lodge are frequent, with guests often seeing deer, elk, moose, and various birds from the lodge or nearby trails. On both of my visits, I spotted moose, and one staff member even mentioned that a bear had been climbing a tree just below the outdoor deck only a day before we arrived.
• Photography – Mount Engadine Lodge and its surroundings provide incredible photography opportunities, from sweeping mountain vistas and wildlife sightings to the changing light over Moose Meadows. 10 Cons of Staying at Mount Engadine Lodge

Mount Engadine Lodge is perfect for travelers who want to slow down and enjoy an authentic mountain retreat but it may not be what you are expecting. It has its downsides and here are some of the cons to keep in mind before you book.

1. You must have a car to get here — there’s no public transit to the lodge or in the area, but the drive itself is stunning, making the journey part of the adventure. A gravel road leads to the lodge and while it might feel a bit rugged, it keeps the location remote and peaceful, far from busy highways. It can be challenging to find the lodge if you are unfamiliar with the area but the lodge provides clear directions, and there is clear signage.
2. A remote setting means limited non-outdoor activities — if you’re not into hiking, wildlife watching, or similar activities, it might feel quiet as there is no nightlife, town, or entertainment; but this is perfect for those craving true unplugged mountain solitude.
3. Nightly room prices starts at $525 CDN in low season and alcohol is pricey — it’s a splurge, but considering all meals and the unique experience included, we found it excellent value compared to similar remote lodges.
4. Dinner menu choices are limited and planned in advance however, they do ask for allergies and preferences when you book and are very accommodating, ensuring everyone is well cared for. Breakfast and lunch have a few options to choose from.
5. Meals are served at specific times and you usually eat as part of a group at a shared table which encourages a relaxed routine and communal dining experience. You will need to schedule activities around mealtimes as no other nearby eateries exist.

How to Get to Mount Engadine Lodge

Mount Engadine Lodge feels like a world away but it’s only about a 1 hour and 50 minute drive from Calgary (around 140 km) and just an hour from Canmore (about 40 km). To get here you will travel along the gravel Smith Dorrien Trail (Highway 742) and the paved Highway 40. There is clear signage along the highway that marks the turnoff to the lodge, so it’s relatively easy to find even if you don’t know the area. In winter, give yourself extra time as the roads can be snow-covered and icy, but the journey is part of the adventure. Free parking is available onsite.

There is no public transit or shuttle service to the lodge but they can assist you with booking private transportation upon request.
